Two species of butterfly pose one of the biggest threats to our grapes: the Cochylis and the Eudemis. The ladies of the species spread a special scent to send out a signal to the gents that lets them know they are willing, ready and near. The men shoot off to meet the ladies, they make love and the females deposit their eggs in the grape leaves. The caterpillars that come out of these eggs do considerable damage to our crops. In order to combat this, we place capsules with artificial lady-butterfly aroma among the vines. The men now smell eager ladies everywhere and are driven wild. Lusty and foaming at the mouth they endeavour to find the ladies, to no avail and eventually they collapse with exhaustion. I admit that the method is not exactly animal-friendly, but it is human-friendly: in this way we don’t need to use chemical pesticides and there are plenty of butterflies left.
